If you aren’t the avid runner already, its ok! We still would love to see you at the Fit Foodie 5K coming up on September 13th. Here are a few tips to prepare you for the event, if running 3.1 miles isn’t in your daily routine.

Eat a good snack- Eating a snack filled with protein, healthy fats and complex carbs will keep you fueled during your run. Try a small whole wheat bagel with peanut butter and honey or Greek yogurt with homemade granola. Hydration is also key. Drink plenty of water before and after your run to keep your body hydrated. “Before” also includes the day or days leading up to a race.  Stay hydrated all week, not just that one day!

Find the right shoes for you- I used to always pick my shoes based on what they looked like. I really thought that I couldn’t tell the difference and all running shoes were the same…until I found the right shoe for me. There are so many choices out there. You need to try on several different types and see which shoe can offer you the right support. If your shoe is comfortable and supportive, you will be able to run longer distances without pain.

Practice makes perfect- Work you way up. If 3.1 miles sounds intimidating and unachievable, start at one mile and gradually work your way up. Each day push yourself a little further and in no time you will have built the stamina to reach your goal!

Don’t give up!- If you don’t reach your goal one day, that’s ok! Keep trying! Its also ok to rest if you need to. If you can run for a mile but then need a break to recharge, that’s perfectly fine! Listen to your body but keep trying. You will feel amazing and very proud of yourself when you reach your goal!

If you get bored when running, try to change things up. Austin has so many beautiful trails to explore. Try running by the lake or on a nature trail. The scenery can distract your mind and help you run further. Get a running buddy. Find a friend to run with you. They will keep you accountable for making sure you get out and go that day and they also make it more fun! Make it a family affair- getting your kids active is a great to get their energy out as well. And you have to run fast if you are chasing after a kiddo, right?

We hope to see you at the Fit Foodie 5k! Keep participating in our 2 week challenge to get a chance to win entries into the race!600x225_Austin
