Are you ready for the 4th of July celebration this week? What foods do you associate with the 4th of July?  Hamburgers? Hotdogs? What about grilled veggies or fruit?

Over the weekend Kids Kitchen hosted a grilling lesson at the Funkytonk Farmer’s Market at the North Austin Trailer Yard. Here, we taught kids how to grill veggie kabobs using local produce such as zucchini, yellow squash, tomatoes, onions, eggplant, and okra.  We used a simple olive oil with salt and pepper. We also had a wonderful lime and honey sauce for fruits such as watermelon and pineapple.  While we might prefer our fruit fresh and cold on a hot day, pairing a piece of fruit with your veggies can add a whole new level of flavor especially with bell peppers.   For dessert, try grilling fresh peaches and topping with honey and frozen vanilla yogurt.

Cooking is fun and educational, include your kids in the process and they are more likely to actually eat it!

We hope everyone has a safe and fun 4th of July!  Get out there and GRILL!
